Montana Solitaire, also known as Gaps or Spaces, is a challenging card game that requires strategic thinking and careful planning. The objective of the game is to order all of the cards in four rows of increasing order from 2 to K, with each row containing cards of the same suit.
In the layout, all 52 cards are dealt face up into four rows, with 13 cards in each row. It is important to note that the cards should not overlap. After the dealing, the Aces are removed to create four blank spaces.
During gameplay, you can move any card to a blank spot if it is one rank higher than the card to the left of the blank and belongs to the same suit. To fill a blank spot, simply click on it, or click on the card you want to move to a space if it is movable.
It's worth mentioning that a space in the first column can only be filled with a Two from any suit. Additionally, a King blocks any spaces to the right of it, limiting your options for arranging the cards. If all spaces are blocked by a King, there is an option to press the Shuffle Remaining button. This action will gather all cards that are not in ascending value within the same suit and shuffle them with Aces before redealing.
To increase your chances of winning, it is advisable to avoid leaving gaps to the right of Kings and carefully select which deuce you play to an empty space in the first column. Thinking ahead and considering future moves can greatly improve your strategy.
Some useful tips include avoiding finishing a row too soon by placing a King in the 12th column before dealing. This prevents getting a useless gap in the 13th column for the rest of the game. Another suggestion is not to place too many cards before the final redeal. Leaving more cards unplayed gives you more freedom of choice for your last moves.
When playing as a puzzle game, with unlimited use of the Redo command, Montana Solitaire is nearly always winnable. However, the chance of winning in a regular game is approximately 1 in 20.
In terms of scoring, you earn one point for each card that is in sequence, with the highest possible score being 48 points. If you have any shuffle moves remaining, you receive an extra 10 points for each one. However, using the undo button will result in a penalty of 2 points per use. Once you finish the game, your score will be calculated and your performance will be ranked accordingly.
